The Irish Times for 16th June 1978 has a story about Eamonn Dunphy with a familiar ring – Dunphy was in hospital that day after a car accident on his way home from World Cup coverage in RTE. It seems to me that I heard a similar story recently; in fact, there have been many stories about the trials and tribulations of Dunphy’s broadcasting career. I didn’t even know there was a World Cup in ’78; all I was interested in was a young Conor O’Cleary’s reports of 43rd Infantry Battalion’s deployment in Lebanon in the early days of UNIFIL. So it is thirty years later, Dunphy is still the same and there are still Irish troops in ‘the Leb’ with the UN. Some things never change.
